With the brilliant R rated Mad Max: Fury Road taking in a healthy $370 million dollars at the box office, it seems likely (though not guaranteed) that a sequel will be forthcoming. Earlier reports seemed to indicate that the potential sequel would be called Mad Max: Furiosa, however George Miller has since taken to calling the sequel, appropriately, Mad Max: Wasteland.
Tom Hardy is signed on for three more outings as Max Rockatansky, yet Charlize Theron has not been signed on for any more movies and I hope it stays that way. Don't get me wrong, I loved Fury Road, but this franchise is about Max Rockatansky, not Furiosa. Furiosa was a supporting character, and a good one at that, but I feel like her character arc has been wrapped up, and Max is off into the desert for another adventure.
The Mad Max franchise has always been about Max battling his inner demons over his inability to save his wife and child, and his personal struggle to maintain some semblance of sanity in an insane world. If we're lucky enough to get a sequel, I want to see Max explore new locations, meet new characters, develop new relationships, come across new situations, and get into all new 'vibe' of vehicular carnage. Incorporating Furiosa into the sequel seems to be stagnation, more than it does progression, to me.
The point is, if Wasteland gets the green-light, then I want a Mad Max movie, and not a Furiosa movie. Furiosa is holed up in Immortan Joe's old place, and vehicular warfare is a staple of the Mad Max franchise, kinda hard to engage in those kinds of activities when you're stationary. They could always come up with some contrived way to get her in another chase, but that's becoming very reminiscent of Beyond Thunderdome, which was a horrible movie. Max is a lone wolf, a wanderer, and the titular character of the franchise, he's who I want to see more of.
